Progress Update on Lerner Hall Music and Performance Space

Transformation of the lower-level event space in Lerner Hall is nearing its final stages. The renovation project will create a world-class performance space for musical, dance, and artist performances, and arts-related programming and activities. Named the Walter and Shirley Wang Pavilion, the space is set to open for Fall 2023.

The new stage build out is nearly complete

The first-floor entrance and new stair build out and finishes are complete, with touch ups taking place.

The ceiling, walls, and stage construction are in the final steps. Unique house and specialty lighting, and acoustical finishes are installed.

The new AV and sound system has been activated and is undergoing testing. The project team is working closely with Event Management on coordination and implementation of sound and lighting programs. The project team is working with the music department to procure a new piano and other music equipment that is designated for the space. Furniture is being finalized and ordered.

The new event space also has totally renovated bathrooms and a catering area.

As construction wraps up, the space will undergo testing for a soft opening during the summer and for a grand debut in the fall for the new academic year.

Event Management will support student event scheduling. The space will also be utilized by the Music department for teaching during the day and for student performances.

The project is the final installment of a three-part initiative towards enhancing spaces for the student community, through a generous donation made by University Trustee Shirley Wang BUS’93 and Walter Wang. The performance space will be named the Walter and Shirley Wang Pavilion.

In 2021, the John Jay Hall lounge was restored as an open space for the residential community. Then, in 2022 the Wallach ESPORTS Room was created as a new and unique place for undergraduate students to come together through gaming.
